Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request the 10 day holiday as I want to pursue a ten day "Effective communication course at workplace" which is advertised by Sault College online at Indeed.
The reason for my interest to enrol in this short-term training is that not only will it be useful in my daily professional life but also it will lead to enhance my interpersonal skills. Being a Customer service representative, good communication skills are pivotal to deal with different type of individuals.
This programme is giving me an opportunity to become a profound communicator even if the client is rude, desperate, or not satisfied with the services we provide. Though I am honed in the work I do as it's been five years, I am a CSR. I still want to learn the new tactics by participating in this course. Moreover, it will also teach to remail calm and courteous all the time while servicing.
I hope you will consider my request to kindly grant me a 10 day off. I will look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Simranjeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You described the course, explained how the company can assist (by granting time off), and detailed the benefits for your role as a Customer Service Representative. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas could be slightly more professional; for instance, the request for '10 day holiday' sounds more like a vacation than a professional development opportunity. To improve, ensure that the language used reflects the serious nature of workplace training and clearly links the course content to specific company goals or performance metrics.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter follows a logical structure, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Though' to link ideas. However, the transition between the description of the course and the request for time off is slightly abrupt. The paragraphing is functional, but the flow could be improved by using more varied linking phrases to connect the benefits of the course to your daily tasks. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'interpersonal skills', 'pivotal', and 'courteous'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'honed in the work' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'remail' (a typo for 'remain'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some phrases feel slightly repetitive or imprecise. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural collocations and ensuring that your vocabulary choices are consistently precise and appropriate for a professional business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'lead to enhance' (should be 'lead to enhancing'), 'different type of individuals' (should be 'different types of individuals'), and '10 day off' (should be '10 days off'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of your request. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of gerunds after certain verbs. Your control of punctuation is generally good, though some minor slips remain.
