Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or madam,
I hope you are doing well.
This letter is regarding a course that I am keen to join. I am planning to do a functional dry needling course from past two months and yesterday I saw an advertisement related to this course. They are giving some special discounts to first 10 members.
I wants to request a study vacation for one week. So, I could concentrate better in completion of this course. In addition, with less distraction, I could understand all the perspectives in a great manner.
This course has great impact in patients rehabilitation programme. Firstly, this may help to improve restricted range of motion. Moreover, it also helps to reduce muscle spasm and tightness. A reason for that is needles can improve blood circulation in affected area and that is how it reduces the pain.
Thank you so much for your understanding. I will wait for your positive reply.
Best Regards,
Riya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: the course is described, the request for leave is made, and the professional benefits are explained. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the course is brief, and the request for leave could be more formal and persuasive. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter, though it leans slightly towards informal at times. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the specific content of the training and provide a more detailed justification for how the company would benefit from your attendance, rather than focusing solely on patient outcomes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. The use of cohesive devices such as 'In addition,' 'Firstly,' and 'Moreover' helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. The opening and closing are standard and appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, try to vary the sentence structure and use more sophisticated linking phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly, rather than relying on simple list-like transitions at the start of every paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'functional dry needling,' 'rehabilitation programme,' and 'range of motion.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'do a course' (better: 'enroll in a course') and 'in a great manner' (better: 'effectively'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. Focusing on more academic or professional collocations will help elevate your writing style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'I am planning to do a... course from past two months' should be 'for the past two months,' and 'I wants to request' is a subject-verb agreement error. Additionally, 'A reason for that is needles can' is slightly awkward; a more natural phrasing would be 'This is because the needles...' Despite these errors, the communication is not impeded, and you demonstrate an attempt at using complex sentences.
