Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to request a permission to attend a training course that I came across, known as project management course. A very reputed and experience industry is conducting this training. It is two-weeks online programme. It focusses on time management, team coordination, communication, and problem-solving skills.

I would appreciate if company could support me in covering course fees and allowing me to adjust my work schedule during the training. Since the session are held in the evenings. I may occasionally leave an hour earlier. I assure you I that I will complete all my pending tasks in advance and ensure that my responsibilities are not affected.

I believe this course will not only bring benefits to my professional development but also to the company. The knowledge and skills I gain will help me manage projects more efficiently, improve teamwork, and communicate more effectively with clients and colleagues. In addition, I will be happy to share what I learn with the rest of the team through a short presentation after completing the course.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your positive response.

Yours sincerely,

Ramneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the course, explain the support needed (financial and scheduling), and articulate the benefits to both yourself and the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal business request. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough detail to make the request persuasive. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about the course provider or the exact duration to add further realism, but overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Since', and 'not only... but also' to link ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'professional development', 'responsibilities', and 'efficiently'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'request a permission' (should be 'request permission') and 'A very reputed and experience industry' (should be 'reputable' and 'experienced organization'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally. Using more precise collocations would help elevate the score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'Since the session are held' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'I assure you I that I will' (a typo/repetition). Punctuation is generally good, though the sentence fragment 'Since the session are held in the evenings.' should be joined to the following sentence. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would improve this score.
