Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Prateek and I work in the marketing department of the company. I am writing this letter in regards of the training course, I want to pursue in near future.

I have seen the advertisement about the training course last week. The coaching institute is offering variety of courses, however I intend to enroll in data analytics course. I believe, this course would be beneficial for me as well as the company.

The classes of data analytic course are starting next week. I was hoping if you could make some amendments in my schedule and leave the weekend vacant so that I can attend the classes. Apart from this, I would appreciate if you can reduce my work hours too because it will be difficult for my to manage a full-time job along with the heavy coursework.

As we all know that our company is taking analytic projects in the upcoming year. In this scenario, I believe that my knowledge of data analytics will prove beneficial for us to achieve the organizational goals. Along with with, I can guide other team members also about the scope and demand of these upcoming projects.

I hope you will approve my request. I will be looking forward to your reply.

Yours sincerely,

Prateek.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the data analytics course, explained the specific support needed from your manager (schedule amendments and reduced hours), and clearly linked the course to the company's upcoming projects. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of how the course benefits the company is slightly more detailed; for example, you could mention a specific type of project or a particular skill that would directly solve a current business challenge. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph dedicated to a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'In this scenario' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the request for time off and the justification for the course could be more fluid. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion, which helps the reader navigate your request effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'amendments', 'organizational goals', and 'coursework'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'in regards of' (should be 'in regard to') and 'taking analytic projects' (should be 'undertaking' or 'working on'). While you successfully communicate your meaning, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise business-related collocations to enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several minor grammatical errors, such as 'difficult for my to manage' (should be 'difficult for me') and 'Along with with' (a repetition error). Additionally, there are some missing articles, such as 'in data analytics course' (should be 'in a data analytics course'). Despite these slips, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing your control over articles and prepositions will help you achieve a higher score.
