Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I would like to inform you about the advertisement I watched recently on social media regarding marketing course. After watching video I searched more about the marketing course and I found that this course will be very helpful to boost sales for our company. In this course they teach about the method and strategies to attract customers in low budget.
This course will be very helpful for our company as well. I want a favor from your side. This course took about a month and i will be starting from September 1st. Can I please get paid holidays from our company so I can briefly focus on this course.
As I am marketing manger of our company, I observed that we spent lot more on advertisement per year. The goal of this course is to minimize extra expenses and we can save the cost from unnecessary ads.
I will be very thankful to you if you approved my request.
Yours Faithfully,
Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the course is described, the request for paid leave is made, and the professional benefits are explained. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the description of the course is quite vague, mentioning only 'methods and strategies' without specific details. The request for 'paid holidays' is a bit informal and could be more professionally phrased as 'paid study leave'. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it occasionally slips into a more conversational style. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the ideas could be expanded with more specific professional context to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the request and the justification. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Transitions between sentences are often abrupt, such as the jump from 'This course will be very helpful for our company as well' to 'I want a favor from your side'. Using more varied linking words or phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') would improve the flow and coherence of the text significantly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. The student relies on basic phrasing, such as 'very helpful' (used twice) and 'I want a favor'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'watched' instead of 'saw' an advertisement, and 'marketing manger' (spelling error). While the meaning is clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate more professional, topic-specific terminology related to business training and marketing strategies, and avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include article usage ('the marketing course' vs 'a marketing course'), verb tense inconsistencies ('This course took about a month' should be 'takes'), and minor punctuation or spelling errors ('i' should be capitalized, 'manger' should be 'manager'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. The student should focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage to improve accuracy.
