Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Brown,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing to express my interest in a the 20-day training course on the advance use of technology in graphic design, organised by Artistic hub Designing. I came across an advertisment for this course in the Times magazine yesterday.

I would be greatful if you could assist me in joining this course, as it is a 20 days programme. It would be difficult for me to manage both my software design work and the training course simultaneously. Therefore, I would appreciate it if you could arrange for someone to cover my duties during training period. Additionally, I would be greatful if you could help me reschedule my three ongoing projects, which I am required to submit by the end of this week.

This course will greatly benefit our company by enhancing my graphic design skills. I will learn new editing techniques, which will help me create innovative and creative software designs for the company. Nowaday, high-quality and creative designs are widely used. Therefore, this course could help our company to attract more customers and generate good revenue.

Thank you for considering my request.

Yours Faithfully,

Bijal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the training course, explain the support needed from the company (covering duties and rescheduling projects), and articulate the benefits for your professional role. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear justification for your request. You have maintained a consistent focus on the task throughout the letter, ensuring that the reader understands both the nature of the course and the specific assistance required to participate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your request easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Additionally', and 'Consequently' (implied) to link your sentences effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between describing the course and explaining the necessary support is smooth. The overall structure is coherent and professional, meeting the requirements for a formal business letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'simultaneously', 'innovative', and 'generate good revenue'. However, there are some minor spelling errors, such as 'greatful' instead of 'grateful' and 'advertisment' instead of 'advertisement'. Additionally, 'Nowaday' should be 'Nowadays'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the score from reaching the higher bands. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations to enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, such as 'I would appreciate it if you could arrange for someone to cover my duties'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'a the 20-day training course' (article error) and 'during training period' (missing article). Despite these occasional slips, your control over grammar is generally good, and the meaning is never obscured. The punctuation is mostly accurate, supporting the overall readability of the letter.
