Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing in response to an advertisement for a training course which I find useful for me and my job.
I would like to join business management course. This training course benefits me in many ways such as how to build strategies and boost up the confidence. It includes proficiency in communication skills and problem solving skills as well. Apart from this, it helps to give some tips for team work and how to manage critical situations as a team member.
I need some help from the company to reduce my work hours so that I can do this training course. I can work from 8am to 2 pm because my classes will be in the evenings at 4pm.
This course benefits me in my job as well. It helps me to improve my communication skills and boost up my confidence due to which I will confidently attend clients with a positive attitude. Moreover, it benefits me with strategies and team work also which helps me to increase the productivity of the company.
I hope the company will cooperate and consider my request.
Yours faithfully
Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the course, requesting company assistance, and explaining the professional benefits. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the benefits of the course are mentioned in the second paragraph and then restated in the fourth paragraph with very similar phrasing regarding 'communication skills' and 'confidence'. To improve, you should aim to expand on the specific content of the course or provide more distinct professional justifications in the final section rather than repeating the same points.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'Moreover', and 'so that' helps guide the reader through the text. However, the progression of ideas feels slightly mechanical, and the transition between the request for help and the benefits of the course could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow, though the repetition of ideas across paragraphs slightly impacts the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proficiency', 'critical situations', and 'productivity'. However, there are some instances of unnatural phrasing, such as 'boost up the confidence' and 'confidently attend clients'. 'Boost up' is informal and redundant; 'boost' or 'enhance' is sufficient. Additionally, 'attend clients' is not the standard collocation; 'interact with clients' or 'serve clients' would be more precise. Expanding your range of collocations and avoiding phrasal verbs that sound like spoken English will help you reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'I would like to join business management course' (missing the article 'a') and 'it benefits me with strategies' (which is slightly awkward; 'it provides me with strategies' would be better). Punctuation is generally correct, though the letter would benefit from more varied sentence beginnings to improve the overall flow. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading regarding articles and verb-preposition combinations.
