Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager.
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my desire for a training course which will be helpful for my job and company. I would like to explain the situation.
Today I saw an advertisement of the Project Management Professional (PMP) training program. The classes are held in evening time between 5:00 pm to 6:00pm, so I wouldn’t miss my routine work schedule.
I would really appreciate if company would reimburse the training fees. In addition to this, I am open to work on weekends if I would have any backlog pending.
I would like to pursue this course as it will enhance my skills in project deadline, pie chart, and other project related softwares. Additionally, they are also offering a 1 year of free subscription of project management softwares which includes MS excel, MS word, and PowerPoint.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the PMP course, explain the request for financial support, and outline the benefits for your job. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, mentioning 'pie chart' as a skill gained from a PMP course is slightly inaccurate, as PMP focuses on methodology, risk management, and leadership rather than basic software features. To reach a higher band, ensure your examples are more professional and relevant to the specific training mentioned. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, though the opening 'Dear Manager' is less standard than the suggested 'Dear Sir or Madam'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. The transition between the course description and the request for funding could be smoother. Furthermore, the paragraphing is a bit fragmented; the letter could benefit from better integration of the request for support with the justification of why the company should provide it. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is clear.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reimburse', 'pursue', and 'consideration'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, 'evening time' is redundant; 'in the evening' is more natural. Referring to MS Excel and Word as 'project management softwares' is technically incorrect, as these are general productivity tools. To improve, focus on using more precise professional terminology and avoid repeating the word 'project' too frequently. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if I would have any backlog pending'. However, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'advertisement of' should be 'advertisement for', and '1 year of free subscription' should be 'a one-year free subscription'. There are also minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'in evening time' instead of 'in the evening'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles to improve your accuracy.
