Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter for the seek of permission to attend a short course which I saw recently advertised. This program is related with improving communication and leadership skills. I really very interested in this programme. This course takes three days to complete and to get certificate.
It is very beneficial for me if you give permission to indulge in this program. As well as It is great if the company provide me help such as pay fee and also give me three days off. Even this course is held outside of the city if possible the organization can pay for my travelling.
This program will help me to enhance my leadership, communication skills, decision making and problem solving skills. I can talk confidently when I work with other colleagues in the organization. Also can share my views related with this program learn how to work in team.
yours faithfully,
Jaspreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: describing the course, requesting company support, and explaining the benefits. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the course improves communication and leadership, you could have provided more specific details about the course content or the company's specific needs to make your request more persuasive. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the opening 'Dear sir' is slightly informal given the prompt's instruction to use 'Dear Sir or Madam'. Overall, the response is clear and fulfills the basic requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on one of the required points. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'As well as' and 'Also' are used to link sentences, but the flow between ideas could be smoother. For example, the transition between the request for financial support and the benefits of the course is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect your arguments more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your request clearly. You use some relevant business-related terms such as 'leadership skills', 'decision making', and 'problem solving'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'for the seek of permission' (should be 'for the purpose of' or 'to request') and 'indulge in this program' (which is not the correct context for 'indulge'). To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise vocabulary and avoid awkward phrasing. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. Examples include 'I really very interested' (missing verb 'am'), 'to get certificate' (missing article 'a'), and 'Even this course is held' (should be 'Even though this course is held'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and missing articles throughout the text. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency and accuracy of the response.
