Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am working as a doctor for your company 'Server Pharma' for two years. Recently I saw an advertisement in The Daily Star newspaper about the Basic Life Support training. Which involves how to save life at the emergency situations like accident or drowning.

The company may support me financially as well as by giving leave for few days. It would surely benefit me and the company in the long run.

As we deal with a huge quantity of worker for their safety issues, I think it would be very wise decision for me to take part in this training.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the development of the ideas. While all three bullet points are addressed—describing the course, requesting company support, and explaining the benefits—the development is very brief. For instance, the description of the course and the explanation of how it benefits the company are quite superficial. To reach a higher band, you must expand on your points by providing more detail, such as specific dates, the duration of the course, or more concrete examples of how the training will be applied to your daily duties at 'Server Pharma'.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is organized into short paragraphs, which is appropriate for the task. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat abrupt due to the brevity of the text. There is a limited use of cohesive devices; for example, the transition between the course description and the request for support could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect your sentences and paragraphs more naturally, ensuring a logical flow of information throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but remains quite basic. Phrases like 'huge quantity of worker' are slightly unnatural; 'large number of employees' would be more appropriate. There is little attempt to use less common or more sophisticated vocabulary. To improve your score, try to incorporate more precise professional terminology related to your field or the training context. For example, instead of 'save life', you could use 'provide life-saving interventions' or 'emergency medical response'. Expanding your range of collocations will help you convey your message with greater precision and professional tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains several grammatical errors that affect the quality of the writing. For example, 'I am working... for two years' should be 'I have been working... for two years' to correctly indicate duration. The sentence 'Which involves how to save life...' is a sentence fragment and should be integrated into the previous sentence. Additionally, 'at the emergency situations' should be 'in emergency situations'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors limits the score. Focus on mastering present perfect continuous tenses and ensuring that your sentences are complete and correctly punctuated.
