Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing today as I recently saw an advertisement for a course called the American Securities Course. This course explains in depth knowledge of investing in American markets, along with different tools to understand the risks and returns.

I was wondering if our organization could grant me some vacation time in order to pursue this course, as it requires a lot of time and consistency to pass the exams. On top of that, I would need a referral from any of our board members, as it will add additional credits towards my final transcript.

Upon completion of the course, I will be an asset towards the company as I will have a full understanding of American markets as well, and I could be handling both of our departments easily. Additionally, it will also build a rapport between our head office and the one located in the States. This would also open up a variety of investment options which can be beneficial for our eligible clients.

Thanking You,

Nishant.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the American Securities Course, explain the support needed (vacation time and a referral), and articulate the benefits to the company. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail about the course content or the nature of the 'tools' mentioned to further develop your ideas, as the current explanation is somewhat general. However, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use cohesive devices such as 'On top of that', 'Upon completion', and 'Additionally' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that the connection between sentences is more varied and natural. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'in depth knowledge', 'pursue this course', and 'build a rapport' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'an asset towards the company' (usually 'an asset to the company') and 'handling both of our departments easily' (which is slightly informal). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise professional terminology would elevate the response to a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate and easy to understand. There are a few minor errors, such as 'explains in depth knowledge' (should be 'provides in-depth knowledge') and 'referral from any of our board members' (which is slightly ambiguous). Punctuation is generally correct, and the formal tone is maintained throughout. The errors present do not impede communication, and you show a good command of standard English grammar.
