Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manger,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to show my interest in French learning course, which I have seen on our company website.
There are two different levels in this course beginner and advance. However, I can write and speak in French for basic level, So I want to take advance level to communicate fluently.
I just want you to sponsor my tuition fees for this program and it will be perfect for me if company will give me weekends off to focus on this course.
This course will help me to communicate with French speaker customers because our 20% of clients are from Quebec, Canada, they are only comfortable in French and we do not have enough staff to deal with it. This skill allow me to communicate freely for company benefits.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will accept my request.
Best regards,
Simranjeet Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the French course, explain the support needed (tuition and time off), and justify the relevance of the course to your job duties regarding Quebecois clients. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. To reach a higher band, you could expand on how the course specifically benefits the company's bottom line or provide more detail on the course structure. Overall, the task is fully addressed, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Therefore' (implied), though the flow could be improved with more varied linking words. For instance, the transition between the course description and the request for support is a bit abrupt. Using more sophisticated transitions like 'Furthermore' or 'In addition to this' would enhance the logical flow between your points and improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your message. You use relevant terms such as 'tuition fees', 'communicate fluently', and 'consideration'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'French learning course' (should be 'French language course') and 'French speaker customers' (should be 'French-speaking customers'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more natural collocations and precise terminology related to professional development and business communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I can write and speak in French for basic level' (should be 'at a basic level') and 'this skill allow me' (should be 'allows'). Additionally, there are punctuation and article errors, such as 'the company' instead of 'the company' or 'a company'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
