Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request the company's support in helping me to attend a short -term training course which will benefit both my professional development and the company.
I recently saw an advertisement about three days human resource and business management course on the company's website. This course mainly focuses on new trends in business management and how to manage employees properly. This also includes understanding the mindset of workers and providing better work environment to retain them for a longer period of time.
I would be grateful if company could cover the course fee and allow me to take three days paid leave to attend the course. I will complete all the urgent work before taking leave and will guide my colleagues about the remaining work.
This course will improve my management skills that I will use to increase the productivity and reduce the employee turnover. I will learn to execute projects more efficiently in this course which will not only benefits me, but the company as well.
Thank you for your consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the training course, specify the support needed from the company (fee coverage and leave), and explain the professional benefits. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear justification for the request. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about the course provider or the exact dates to make the request feel even more authentic and persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the information easy to follow. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'This course', 'I would be grateful if', and 'not only... but... as well' to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is effective and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow is smooth, and the transition between the request for support and the explanation of benefits is logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'professional development', 'employee turnover', and 'efficiently'. The word choice is generally precise and fits the formal tone of the letter. There are a few minor issues, such as 'three days human resource... course' which should be 'three-day human resources course'. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic business expressions would help elevate the score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There are minor slips, such as 'if company could' (needs an article: 'the company') and 'benefits me' (should be 'benefit me' after 'will'). Punctuation is generally correct, though the hyphenation in 'short-term' could be more consistent. Despite these minor errors, the meaning is always clear, and the control over complex structures is consistent enough to support a solid band 7.
