IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You work for an international company. You have seen an advertisement for a training course which will be useful for your job.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- describe the training course you want to do
- explain what the company could do to help you
- say how the course will be useful for your job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
My name is Mark Smith and I am working as a Technical Consultant in your company Rogers Communication. I saw the advertisement for a French language training course on our company's website www.rogers.com and I am interested in learning French language because most of our clients are from France and I communicate with them on daily basis to solve their technical issues. However, sometimes due to language barrier I have to advice them to contact the French department of our company.
If I join this course I will be able to manage my work and training course very well. I work 9AM to 5PM Monday to Friday and the timing for the classes for French language training are 5:30PM to 7PM Monday to Friday which will be held online. Sir, could you please allow me to stay until 7PM in the office? because it takes 45 minutes to drive back home and in doing so I will miss the beginning of the class everyday.
By doing this course, I will be able to join the bilingual department of our company and help more French speaking clients. As you know, the bilingual department is mostly busy helping and if I join, it will be beneficial for the company as well as our clients will be able to get solutions to their problems more quickly which will improve our customer service rating as well.
I hope you will consider my request promptly.
Yours faithfully,
Mark Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the French language course, explained the specific support needed from your manager regarding office hours, and articulated the professional benefits for both the company and your role. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, showing a good understanding of the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening salutation matches the prompt's instruction; you used 'Dear Sir,' but the prompt specifically requested 'Dear Sir or Madam,' which is a minor but important detail in formal correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the request. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction to the specific request and finally the justification. You used cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'If I join,' and 'By doing this course' effectively to link your thoughts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the request, the benefits, and the closing. The flow is natural, and the reader can easily follow your argument without confusion. The structure is clear and supports the overall message well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using professional terms like 'Technical Consultant,' 'bilingual department,' and 'customer service rating.' While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items. For example, instead of saying 'I am interested in learning,' you could use 'I am keen to pursue.' There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, and your spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have to advice them' (should be 'advise' as a verb) and 'the timing for the classes... are' (should be 'is' to agree with 'timing'). Additionally, 'on daily basis' should be 'on a daily basis.' Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence variety is sufficient to maintain the reader's interest throughout the letter.
