Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well.

Good Morning,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I would like to do chinese language course, and this course can help me get a promotion, which I can use to advise Chinese clients.

I want to learn this language, which is provided by the language institute of Grow. I am really interested in taking this course. This program is 3 months long, fully digital, and 4 hours a week.

I would like to request that the company give me 4 hours off per week to take this course. I would also request that the company bear the fees for this course. Ultimately, this course can help the company with meetings with Chinese clients.

Moreover, the company does not have to pay fees to a translator, and the company can generate more sales through my language skills.

Looking forward to your opinion on this matter.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Harshil Trivedi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the course, explain the support needed from the company, and justify the benefits for your role. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the course will help with 'Chinese clients', expanding on specific business scenarios or the nature of the language skills gained would have provided a more professional tone. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the inclusion of 'Good Morning' after the salutation is redundant and slightly informal for a written request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the course details, the request for support, and the benefits. Paragraphing is used to separate these ideas, which helps readability. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive; you rely heavily on 'and' and 'this course/the company' to link sentences. Using a wider variety of transition words or relative clauses would improve the flow. The overall structure is clear, but the transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to achieve a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your requirements clearly. You use some relevant business-related terms like 'promotion', 'digital', and 'translator'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive. Phrases like 'I want to learn' and 'I would like to request' are functional but basic. To improve, you should aim for more precise collocations and a broader range of vocabulary related to professional development and corporate benefits. There are no significant spelling errors, but the word choice lacks the nuance expected at higher levels.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I would like to do chinese language course' is missing an article ('a' Chinese language course). Additionally, the sentence 'which I can use to advise Chinese clients' is slightly awkward in its placement. You have good control over basic sentence construction, but more variety in complex structures—such as using conditional sentences (e.g., 'If the company were to sponsor this...')—would demonstrate better grammatical range.
