Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Sam Mistry and I am writing this to let you know about the course that I have seen in an advertisement which will be useful for my job.
As you already know, I work as full stack software developer and I have less knowledge about AWS. The course which I saw in advertisement has topics which are needed to be an AWS developer. This course has not only theory but practical as well. The main concern about the course is not the course fee but its test fee. Therefore, I believe that company can compensate test fee if you make request to them.
The course will be useful in many ways such as I can elevate my skills from developer to an AWS specialist. Moreover, I can also contribute in the upcoming project with this skills.
If you need more information of the course, I will send it to you.
Yours faithfully,
Sam Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the course is described, the company's role in covering the test fee is explained, and the professional benefits are outlined. However, the development of these points is somewhat thin. For instance, the description of the course is vague, mentioning only 'topics' without specific details. The request for financial support is also slightly confusing, as it is unclear why the company would need to 'make a request' to cover the fee rather than simply paying it. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the course content and a more professional justification for the company's investment.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas, though the flow is occasionally slightly mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, and the letter follows a standard formal structure. To improve, you could vary your linking words further and ensure that the transition between the description of the course and the request for funding is smoother.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant professional terminology like 'full stack software developer' and 'AWS specialist'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'make request to them' (should be 'make a request to them') and 'contribute in the upcoming project' (should be 'contribute to'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated collocations related to professional development would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles and prepositions, such as 'I have less knowledge about AWS' (should be 'I have limited knowledge of AWS') and 'I will send it to you' (should be 'I can send it to you'). There are also missing articles, such as 'company can compensate' (should be 'the company can compensate'). The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the frequency of these small errors prevents a higher score.
