Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request a help from the company regarding an advertisement for a training course that I have seen recently.
Since we work as teachers in a multinational organization. I try as much as I can to enhance my skills in teaching. Fortunately, I found an educational company offering a 50% discount on the CELTA course.
I would be grateful if you can support me financially, so I would be able to enroll in the upcoming round that starts on July 5. Moreover, They apply an impressive discount on this educational program, therefore, you will not pay the whole package.
I believe this course will play a crucial role in enhancing my teaching level and skills. As this English-teachers related course will add a great value to my teaching experience such as introducing new methodologies, top-notch teaching strategies and modern tools to be utilized in the classroom. I would say that course will be a great value to our work.
Thank you for your assistance in advance. I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Matt Wat

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the CELTA course, explain the request for financial support, and articulate the professional benefits of the training. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing enough detail to make the request persuasive. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the course and the company's specific needs is even more explicit, perhaps by mentioning how it aligns with current departmental goals.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points required by the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with sentence-level cohesion, such as the sentence fragment 'Since we work as teachers in a multinational organization.' Improving the flow between sentences would help achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'multinational organization,' 'methodologies,' and 'top-notch.' There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'request a help' (should be 'request help') and 'English-teachers related course' (which is slightly awkward). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations and avoiding slightly informal phrasing would elevate the lexical quality of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as the sentence fragment mentioned earlier, and punctuation issues, such as the comma splice in 'Moreover, They apply an impressive discount... therefore, you will not pay the whole package.' Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions (e.g., 'the whole package' could be 'the full cost'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for sentence boundaries and subject-verb agreement.
