Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writting this letter to bring to your attention that an advertisement for a course training in French for managers from different countries just came out on board and it will take place in Ikeja, Lagos. It will commence June and it will run for a period of three weeks. There trainers were specialists French communication .
Therefore , with all this in place i would employ the company to sign out one month course empowerment training for me to enable me to attend, i will also need some fund to pay for my lodging in an hotel, feeding and miscellaneous expenses.
The course will indeed be useful because it will deal with client language relationships. More purpose i want to be there , the first day will focus on communication skills, followed by a role-plays and case studies dealing with misunderstandings of language between teams and clients. On the second day ,we will work on project management tools. Then on the final day, we would be taking pictures with one another.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt, which is a positive start. You described the course, requested company support, and explained the relevance to your job. However, the development of these ideas is uneven. While the description of the course content is detailed, the final point about 'taking pictures' is irrelevant to a professional training request and detracts from the purpose of the letter. To improve, ensure all details provided are professional and directly support your argument for why the company should fund your attendance. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, though some phrasing is slightly unnatural.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or misused. For example, 'More purpose i want to be there' is unclear and does not function well as a transition. Additionally, the progression of ideas within the final paragraph is disjointed, moving from professional skills to taking pictures. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition') and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that flows logically into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors. For example, 'employ the company to sign out' is not standard business English; 'request the company to approve' would be more accurate. Similarly, 'course empowerment training' is vague. You have attempted some topic-specific vocabulary like 'role-plays' and 'case studies', which is good. To improve, focus on learning common business collocations and avoid using words that do not quite fit the context, such as 'employ' when you mean 'request' or 'urge'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally hinder readability. Common issues include spelling ('writting'), missing articles ('in an hotel'), and subject-verb agreement ('There trainers were specialists'). Sentence structures are mostly simple or compound, with limited use of complex sentences. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and the use of lowercase 'i'. To improve, proofread your work specifically for basic errors like capitalization and verb forms, and try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences.
