IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You work for an international company. You have seen an advertisement for a training course which will be useful for your job.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- describe the training course you want to do
- explain what the company could do to help you
- say how the course will be useful for your job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to ask for your permission to pursue a French learning course starting next month as advertised in a local newspaper.
This course is designed for beginners who can be trained to communicate in French fluently in three months. Most of their classes are in the evenings, so it will not affect my working schedule. They also access learning through mock test that will be held every Saturday. Success candidates will be awarded with a certificate, that would be acceptable in many nations.
I was wondering if the company would help me in paying a part of the tuition fees, since this skill could be useful to deal with our French-speaking customers. Furthermore, I would appreciate it if you could give paid days off on every Friday to prepare for the mock tests.
This course not only helps to deal with our French-speaking clients but also helps us to establish our branches in French-speaking countries as discussed in our recent meeting regarding the company's future goals. Please let me know if any further information or actions required from me.
I look forward to your prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the French course, requested specific support (financial assistance and time off), and clearly explained the professional benefits. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the link between the course and the company's expansion goals. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are grammatically precise, as minor errors in phrasing can occasionally distract from the clarity of your request. Overall, the response is purposeful and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'This course not only helps... but also helps' to link your ideas effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, you could vary your transition signals slightly more to avoid repetitive structures, but the current flow is clear and professional throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'pursue a French learning course' and 'establish our branches' are appropriate for a professional context. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'Success candidates' (should be 'Successful candidates') and 'deal with' (which is slightly informal; 'communicate with' or 'assist' would be better). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more precise professional collocations would elevate the score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are some grammatical slips that prevent a higher score. For example, 'They also access learning through mock test' should be 'They provide access to learning through mock tests', and 'if any further information or actions required' is missing a verb ('are required'). Additionally, 'give paid days off on every Friday' is slightly awkward; 'grant me paid leave on Fridays' would be more natural. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout.
