Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mam,
subject: training course for job.
I am writing to ask permission to attend the training course I saw advertised and believe would be highly beneficial for my job.
The course is a three day training programme in advanced marketing, communication and customer service skills. this course will teach us how to resolve the bad customer issues by not hurting the customer or the company and how to deal with the sensitive customer service complaints regarding products.in add to it they will also educate us about how to do marketing of our products and services in out of range sectors , the sectors or fields we never imagined. I am specifically interested in learning communication skills which will help me deal with clients from different cultural backgrounds.
I would really appreciate if the company would be willing to pay for the course and provide me leave for three days so I can attend the course . also I would also appreciate assistance with travel expenses as it is held out of city .
I reckon this training would be very helpful for me to deal with international clients more confidently and understanding their deals for our company. I can also help other members of company after learning this course which I think will be very helpful for them and our company.
I will be so thankful of you for this .
regards
sheila

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You described the training course, explained the company's potential role in supporting you, and clearly articulated the benefits for your role. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal request to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing salutations are more professional; 'Dear Mam' is informal and 'regards' should be followed by a formal sign-off. Additionally, while the ideas are relevant, some explanations, such as 'out of range sectors', could be more precisely phrased to improve clarity and professional impact.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'in add to it' and 'I reckon', to link ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or slightly informal. The transition between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the connection between the course description and the request for funding could be more fluid. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'beneficial', 'sensitive', and 'confidently'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'out of range sectors' and 'out of city', which sound slightly unnatural. The phrase 'bad customer issues' is also quite simplistic. To improve, focus on using more precise professional terminology and collocations that are common in a business context. While your meaning is always clear, the lack of more sophisticated or varied vocabulary keeps this in the mid-range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing to ask permission to attend...' and 'I would really appreciate if the company would be willing to pay...'. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the company', 'the course'), punctuation issues (spaces before periods), and capitalization errors ('this course', 'in add to it'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic sentence mechanics and article usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
