Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing regarding an advertisement for a training course which be beneficial for my job.

I recently came across an advertisement for three weeks course on advanced project management which covers time management, team coordination, risk assessment and leadership skills.

I would be grateful if company could help me by covering the course fee and allowing me to take three days off work to attend the training. If possible, I would also appreciate financial assistance with my travel expenses, because the course is being held in another city.

I believe this course would be extremely useful for my job because it would help me manage projects more effectively and improve my ability to coordinate with team members. In addition, the knowledge I gain from the course could help me complete tasks more accurately and contribute to company's overall performance.

I would appreciate it if you could consider my request.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Gagan Goyal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the training course, explain the specific support required from the company (fee coverage, time off, and travel expenses), and articulate the professional benefits of the training. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the course provider or the specific project management challenges you currently face to make the request feel more personalized and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, and the transition between the request for support and the explanation of benefits is smooth. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'If possible' effectively to link ideas. The structure is logical and easy to follow throughout, meeting the requirements for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'advanced project management', 'risk assessment', and 'financial assistance'. However, there are some minor errors in article usage, such as 'if company could help' (should be 'if the company') and 'contribute to company's overall performance' (should be 'the company's'). While these do not impede communication, addressing these small errors would improve the precision of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'which be beneficial' (should be 'which would be beneficial') and the missing articles mentioned previously. Despite these, the majority of your sentences are error-free and the meaning is always clear. The punctuation is accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout the letter.
