Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear manager,
I am writing to ask for you peeni to attend a training course that will be very useful for my job.
The course is about communication and leadership skills. It will take place next month. In this course, I will learn more about customer service and get more skills about team management. This course is offered by professional training center and their classes will take place in the evening.
I want to ask if you can pay half of the amount of fee because, it will help me in doing my job more efficiently. I also want to adjust my working hours, I want to have morning shifts because in the evening I have to attend my classes. Moreover, I want to reduce my weekly hours for one month, after that I will come to my work regularly.
I will be very thankful to you, and I trust the team that they will help me to do this course by managing working hours.
Kind regards,
Gagandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the course, requesting company assistance, and explaining the benefits. However, the development is somewhat basic. For example, the description of the course is quite general, and the explanation of how it will be useful for the job could be more specific to your current role. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the tone is slightly informal for a request to a manager, and the opening salutation 'Dear manager' does not match the required 'Dear Sir or Madam' provided in the prompt. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the ideas could be expanded with more professional detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the request. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the request to the details and finally the logistical needs. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. For instance, the transition between the request for financial help and the request for schedule adjustments is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases would improve the flow and make the connections between ideas more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on simple phrases such as 'get more skills' and 'do my job'. There are also some minor errors, such as 'peeni' (likely a typo for 'permission') and 'professional training center' (missing an article). To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise professional terminology, such as 'professional development', 'financial sponsorship', or 'flexible working arrangements'. The current range is sufficient to convey your meaning, but it does not demonstrate a wide or flexible command of language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'get more skills about team management' (collocation error) and 'reduce my weekly hours for one month, after that I will come to my work regularly' (comma splice). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and subject-verb agreement will help improve your accuracy.
