Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. The writer describes the training course by mentioning that it is about boilers, HVAC operations, and the functions of various components. They clearly explain what the company could do to help by requesting financial funding and a one-month leave of absence. Finally, the utility of the course is explained by linking it to their current role in the maintenance department and career progression. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the ideas are extended reasonably well. While there are some minor awkward phrases, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with logical sequencing of ideas. Paragraphs are used to separate different points, such as the course description, the requests for funding and leave, and the justification for the job. Cohesive devices are employed, including words like 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently', although some are a bit mechanical or used with minor inaccuracies in punctuation. Referencing is generally clear, and the progression of the letter moves smoothly from the introduction to the conclusion. Overall, the structural organization meets the criteria for Band 6.5 well, as the flow of information is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to workplace operations, such as 'maintenance department', 'funding', 'full time course', and 'HVAC operations'. However, there are several noticeable lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'unpcoming' instead of 'upcoming', 'traning' instead of 'training', 'eductaion' instead of 'education', and 'enhace' instead of 'enhance'. Additionally, the phrase 'to know functions various components' contains a grammatical and lexical collocation error. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the score from reaching a higher band. The lexical resource is characteristic of Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate conjunctions such as 'in which I would like to enroll' and 'because currently I am working'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'which I would like to enroll myself for unpcoming fall 2027', 'to know functions various components of these equipment' (equipment is uncountable), and 'allow my leave request'. Punctuation is also slightly flawed in places, such as missing commas before coordinating conjunctions in complex sentences. These errors occasionally cause the reader some difficulty, though meaning remains clear. This performance aligns with Band 6.0.
