Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inform you about a training course in which I would like to enroll for upcoming fall 2027. The course is about boilers and HVAC operations and to learn about the functions various components of this equipment.
I am sure that you are no doubt aware that there is a funding available for employees who are seeking extra training course and are working full time for the company. Therefore, I would like to request funding for my upcoming course and I would appreciate if you grant me this money for my educataion. Moreover, I would also need to take one month off from my work as this is a full-time course and shall need my full attention.
I believe that this course would enhance my quality of work because currently I am working in a maintenance department and my work is to deal with similar equipment. Consequently, this will enhaces my knowledge of boiler and HVAC and also helps me to apply for higher position. I hope you grant me the funds and allow my leave request. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Nitin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all requirements of the prompt well. You successfully describe the training course about boilers and HVAC operations, explain what the company can do to help by requesting funding and a one-month leave of absence, and state how the course will be useful for your job by linking it to your current maintenance department role and career progression. The ideas are clearly relevant and well-developed. However, the tone shifts slightly at the beginning with the phrase 'for upcoming fall 2027,' and the description of the course content could be expanded further. Overall, all bullet points are addressed adequately, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements and maintaining a suitable formal letter format throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from introducing the course, to requesting company support, and finally explaining its practical utility. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, and standard formal letter conventions are observed. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore,' 'Moreover,' and 'Consequently' are utilized to connect ideas, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph ('I am sure that you are no doubt aware...') is a bit wordy and clunky. Overall, the organization is clear, and the reader can easily follow the sequence of your requests and arguments.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'maintenance department,' 'funding,' and 'HVAC operations.' However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that slightly detract from the quality, such as 'educataion' instead of education, and 'enhaces' instead of enhances. Additionally, some phrases lack natural collocation or precision, such as 'to learn about the functions various components' (which is grammatically incomplete) and 'grant me this money.' While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, addressing these mechanical errors and utilizing more sophisticated business collocations will help elevate your score in future writing tasks.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct multi-clause sentences using subordinating conjunctions like 'because' and 'as.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text. For example, 'in which I would like to enroll for upcoming fall 2027' misses an article, 'there is a funding available' contains an incorrect uncountable noun article, and 'shall need my full attention' lacks a clear subject. Furthermore, punctuation and phrasing in clauses like 'and to learn about the functions various components of this equipment' disrupt grammatical continuity. Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and your meaning remains clear to the reader.
