Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in an editing course that I saw recently on an advertisment.
As advertised in the local newspaper, a famous editor is providing free editing course where he will be teaching how to edit a video, what effects should be used and how a HD product works better to get more population to watch the content.
The course starts at 8PM according to pacific timing for four hours because at that time everyone is free from their work. However, I start at 9am IST so these timings are conflicting. So, I need company to give me 2 weeks holidays to finish the course.
This course will be helpful in this job as I know basic editing already but sometime the clients I meet require the data to be sent in more understandable way. Thus, with this course I can learn how different ways of editing help to make things more clear.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Bhupinder Kaur.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt in a generally clear manner. You successfully describe the training course about video editing and explain how it will be useful for your job, noting that clients require data presented in an understandable way. Furthermore, you explain what the company could do to help you by asking for two weeks of holiday due to time zone differences. However, some details are slightly simplistic or lack full professional depth, such as describing the course as being provided by a 'famous editor' without naming them, and the tone fluctuates slightly. Nevertheless, all prompt requirements are addressed, fulfilling the criteria for a solid band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a standard formal letter layout, beginning with an appropriate opening and closing. Ideas are organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the task, such as introducing the course, discussing the schedule conflict, and explaining job relevance. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However' and 'Thus', though some links feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraphing and transitions could be smoother and more sophisticated to reach a higher band. Overall, the organizational structure is logical and easy to follow, earning a band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You attempt some less common vocabulary such as 'express my interest', 'conflicting', and 'understandable way'. However, there are some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'an advertisment' (spelling error) and 'get more population to watch' (unnatural collocation; 'audience' or 'viewers' would be more appropriate). Word choice is generally sufficient for communication, but these slips prevent the lexical score from reaching higher. Therefore, a band 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to express my interest...' and 'This course will be helpful in this job as I know basic editing already...'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation slips present, including missing articles ('an editing course' vs 'editing course', 'give me 2 weeks holidays' instead of 'two weeks of holiday') and a minor typo in the salutation ('Dear sir' instead of 'Dear Sir'). Despite these errors, they rarely impede overall communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter, supporting a band 6.0.
