Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student successfully describes the training course as a three-day Advanced Web Development programme focusing on advanced technologies and AI integration. The second bullet point is addressed by explaining the request for support in terms of attending during working hours or taking paid holiday. Finally, the third bullet point is covered by stating how the course will improve productivity, make websites more user-friendly, increase efficiency, and enable knowledge-sharing with colleagues. Ideas are relevant and appropriately extended. The tone is suitably formal for a letter to a manager. Overall, the task is well addressed, meeting the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised and flows well from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as the course description, the company support needed, and the benefits to the role. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'If it is not possible' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although there is some slight over-reliance on additive transitions like 'Moreover'. Referencing is generally clear and appropriate throughout the letter. This demonstrates the clear logical progression characteristic of Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'programme', 'integrating', 'productivity', and 'responsibilities'. However, there are a few spelling and lexical errors, such as 'benefical' (beneficial) and the repeated typo 'websities' (websites) and 'effciency' (efficiency). Less common vocabulary is attempted with some awareness of style, but inaccuracies prevent a higher band. These errors do not impede communication. The lexical control aligns best with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If it is not possible, I would like to...'). There are several error-free sentences, and control of grammar is generally decent. However, there are a few minor grammatical slips and omissions, such as missing an article in 'make website more user-friendly' (make websites more user-friendly) and a preposition error in 'Thank you considering my request' (Thank you for considering). These errors do not impede communication. The performance sits comfortably at Band 6.5.
