Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request permission to attend a training course that I believe would be highly beneficial to my current role.
The course is a three-day Advanced Web Development programme, which mainly focuses on advanced technologies. Moreover, it is useful to improve productivity of websites by integrating AI into websites. In addition, this programme would help me to make websites more user-friendly.
I would appreciate the company 's support in allowing me to attend the course in working hours. If it is not possible, I would like to apply for three days of paid holiday to attend this course. I will ensure that my current responsibilities are completed before attending the course.
This course will not only be beneficial for me but also allow me to use my advanced technology skills effectively in the company's projects to increase effciency. Moreover, I would be able to share useful techniques I learn from the course with my colleagues.
Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Axay Nayi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the prompt. You begin by describing the training course as a 'three-day Advanced Web Development programme' focusing on advanced technologies and AI integration. You clearly explain how the company can help by allowing attendance during working hours or providing three days of paid holiday. Finally, you explain the usefulness of the course by noting that it will increase efficiency, make websites user-friendly, and allow you to share techniques with colleagues. All parts of the prompt are fully addressed with relevant details and appropriate tone. Band 7.0 reflects this clear, comprehensive coverage of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the request, such as the course description, company support, and workplace benefits. You use several cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'This course will not only be beneficial for me but also allow...'. Although some cohesive links are a bit repetitive, the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout, maintaining clear logical organisation.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary used is generally appropriate and functional for a workplace request letter. You employ some less common lexical items such as 'beneficial', 'responsibilities', and 'integrate AI'. However, there are minor repetitive word choices, such as repeating 'websites' and 'course' multiple times across sentences, and a spelling slip ('effciency' instead of 'efficiency'). The range is sufficient to convey your meaning with some precision and flexibility, fitting the Band 7.0 criteria well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If it is not possible, I would like to...') and relative clauses. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar and punctuation is generally solid. There is a slight slip with spacing around punctuation in 'company 's', but overall grammatical accuracy is strong and communication is never impeded. This performance aligns comfortably with a Band 7.0 score.
