Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr Hope,

I am writing to express my interest in learning the cyber security course which I got to know by an advertising email.

It is called cyber security course which is very useful for me in my current job, It is basically design to protect data from frauders and learn correct ways to save information. It is not only useful in my personal life but also in my work life. I would be able to figure out spam emails and take proper actions to protect our company's privacy.

I would like you to give me permission to attend these classes which are starting next week from monday to thursday. I have checked with amit for the coverage, if you allow me to go then he is ready to cover me during work. It is essential for work becuase I can figure out the frauds and take appropiate action.

Thank you for considering my request,

Yours faithfully,

Arbaz.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You successfully addressed the first bullet point by describing the training course as a cyber security course designed to protect data from fraudsters. You covered the second bullet point by explaining how the company could help, specifically by granting you permission to attend classes from Monday to Thursday and arranging coverage with your colleague Amit. Finally, you addressed the third bullet point by stating how the course will be useful for your job, noting that you will be able to figure out spam emails and take proper actions to protect company privacy. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for a workplace communication. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 task response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter has a generally coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, moving logically from an introduction to the course description, company support, job benefits, and a polite sign-off. However, the salutation contains a minor inconsistency since you started with 'Dear Mr Hope,' but the prompt required 'Dear Sir or Madam,' although this is a minor deviation. Cohesive devices are used, but some transitions feel a bit repetitive or mechanical, such as the repeated use of 'It is...' at the start of multiple sentences in the second and third paragraphs. Referencing is mostly clear, but paragraphing could be slightly more refined to ensure smoother progression. These features align well with the expectations for Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, including terms like 'cyber security', 'privacy', 'frauders', and 'permission'. However, there are some noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as writing 'learning the cyber security course' instead of 'taking' or 'attending', and misspelling 'frauders' (fraudsters) and 'appropiate' (appropriate). Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning without impeding communication. To push into higher bands, more precise collocations and a wider variety of less common lexical items are needed, placing your lexical performance firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would like you to give me permission to attend these classes which are starting next week from monday to thursday.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including lowercase capitalization for proper days and names ('monday', 'amit'), comma splices (e.g., 'job, It is basically design...'), and spelling-related grammatical issues like 'design' instead of 'designed' and 'becuase'. Although these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication. The mixture of accurate simple structures and attempted complex structures corresponds well to the Band 6 descriptor.
