Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to ask you support in attending a training course that would be useful for my current job.
I recently saw an advertisement for a project management training course. It is a six-week course that covers planning, time management, risk management and teamwork. I am particularly interested in this course because it provides practical knowledge that can be used at my work.
I would be grateful if the company could pay the course fee and allow me to adjust my working hours during the training. If paying the full fee is not possible. I would appreciate some financial support.
Taking part in this course can help me develop better planning and organisational skills. This is because I will learn how to manage tasks and meet deadlines. As a result, I will be able to complete my work more efficiently and contribute better to my team.
I would appreciate it if you consider my request.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Vishal Goyal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt in a professional and clear manner. The student describes the project management training course in sufficient detail, including its duration and specific modules such as risk management and teamwork. Furthermore, the writer clearly explains what the company could do to help—asking for financial support and adjusted working hours—and effectively connects the course to their daily job responsibilities, such as improving organisational skills and task management. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is communicated clearly from the opening paragraph. All parts of the task are well-addressed, fulfilling the criteria for a strong score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard business letter conventions. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt: the course description, the request for assistance, and the professional benefits. Paragraphing is used appropriately and supports the overall flow of information. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, as seen in transitions like 'As a result' and 'This is because'. However, referencing and transitions could be slightly more varied and seamless to reach the highest bands. Overall, the organisation is clear and progression is maintained throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and appropriate lexical resource for the task. Vocabulary is generally precise and relevant to the business context, utilizing terms such as 'project management', 'practical knowledge', 'organisational skills', and 'efficiently'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, and word choices are natural enough to convey meaning without any impediment. Spelling and word formation are accurate throughout. While the range is sufficient for some flexibility, it occasionally relies on standard, expected phrases rather than sophisticated, uncommon lexical items, which places it firmly in the Band 7 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures and dependent clauses (e.g., 'If paying the full fee is not possible...', 'I would be grateful if the company could pay...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is managed well. There is, however, a minor grammatical slip in the opening sentence ('ask you support' instead of 'ask for your support'), and a minor punctuation error with a stray full stop in the third paragraph ('not possible. I would'). Despite these minor flaws, control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong and does not impede communication.
