Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
"The intent of this correspondence is to inform you that, i am truly fascinated about the advertisement that you have posted yesterday, about learning new language, on the internet".
It is beyond doubt that, the course you are providing plays indespensable role in life of every international employee. So, i would like to enroll myself in this course.
I would be glad, if you will coperate with me in this challenging situation by paying my half course fee, as per the company's rule. Moreover, i would be happy if you grant me 1 week leave to attend those classes.
Although, this learning would definitely help me as well as your company in many ways like, i would be able to handle all the meetings with foreign clients who speak this language. So, you will not need to hire a translator and pay them.
Based on the reasons outlined above, it is beneficial for both of us and because of these reasons i request you to grant me everything that i mentione above. I will extend my sincere appreciate for your consideration and looking forward for your response.
Yours sincerely,
simran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt, though the tone and perspective are slightly confused at the beginning. The student addresses the manager about a language training course seen on the internet, explains what the company could do to help (pay half the fee and grant one week of leave), and outlines how it will be useful for handling foreign clients without needing a translator. However, the opening line mistakenly treats the manager as the person who posted the advertisement, which slightly misinterprets the workplace context. Furthermore, the salutation uses 'Dear Sir,' while the prompt specifically instructed to begin with 'Dear Sir or Madam,'. Despite these minor task completion slips, all core requirements of the prompt are successfully met and extended with relevant supporting details.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organised into distinct paragraphs with a logical progression of ideas, moving from the introduction of the course to financial and leave requests, followed by the benefits to the company. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'Based on the reasons outlined above' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels somewhat mechanical or misused. For instance, the use of 'Although' at the start of the fourth paragraph is grammatically incorrect and disrupts logical cohesion. Paragraphing is generally used appropriately to separate different points, and referencing is mostly clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the writer's intent easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to use less common items such as 'fascinated', 'indispensable', and 'cooperate'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, spelling, and collocation. For example, 'indespensable' is misspelled, 'coperate' contains a spelling error, and 'extend my sincere appreciate' contains a grammatical form error. The phrase 'intent of this correspondence' feels overly formal and unnatural for a standard workplace email to a manager. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly, these persistent lexical errors and awkward collocations prevent the response from achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with structures like conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'I would be glad, if you will coperate...'). However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several punctuation and agreement errors, such as unnecessary commas ('It is beyond doubt that, the course'), lowercase pronouns for the first person ('i'), and tense shifts ('if you will coperate', 'that I mentione above'). Furthermore, run-on structures and incorrect clause integration appear, such as starting a sentence with 'Although' without an independent clause resolution. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to lower the overall grammatical score.
