Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
With due respect, I have been working in your prestigious organisation for a long time, and I am writing this letter in order to express my interest in the company's new advertisement for a short training course.
At the outset, I would like to provide you with the information of the course in which I am highly interested. Since I am working in the Customer Service department, I interact with numerous client on a daily basis regarding several circumstances. Therefore, I want to enroll in Advanced English learning course, and its duration is only 4 weeks.
Further, it would be highly appreciated if the company would allow me to spare few hours after my work so that I can attend online session. Since the virtual classes are usually about 2 hours a day from Monday to Thursday. I want the company to allow me using their computer services after I finish my work.My work ends at 4:00 p.m., and the class starts at 4:30 p.m. If I attend online class from home, I will not be able to join the class on time.
Lastly, I believe this course will not only enhance my communication abilities but also boost my confidence in interacting with clients from different backgrounds.
Kindly request prompt attention to this matter. Looking forward to your response.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student covers all bullet points required by the prompt successfully. They describe the training course as an 'Advanced English learning course' with a duration of '4 weeks' for the Customer Service department. They explain what the company could do to help by requesting permission to 'spare few hours after my work' and 'use their computer services' to attend online sessions from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Finally, they explain how the course will be useful by stating it will 'enhance my communication abilities' and boost confidence when interacting with clients. The tone is appropriately formal for a workplace letter to a manager. All parts of the task are addressed adequately with clear relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a clear, logical organisation and progression from introduction to course description, company assistance, professional benefits, and closing remarks. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each distinct point. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, with transitional markers like 'At the outset', 'Further', and 'Lastly' guiding the reader through the points. However, referencing and punctuation linking clauses sometimes feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as in the sentence starting with 'Since the virtual classes are usually about 2 hours a day... I want the company to allow me using their computer services', where punctuation separates a dependent clause awkwardly. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a workplace context, including terms such as 'prestigious organisation', 'enroll', 'enhance my communication abilities', and 'backgrounds'. However, there are some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'numerous client' (should be plural 'clients'), 'information of the course' (should be 'information about the course'), and 'allow me using' (should be 'allow me to use'). Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary choice lacks the precision and flexibility associated with higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional clauses ('If I attend online class from home, I will not be able to...') and subordinate clauses introduced by 'since' and 'so that'. While there are many error-free sentences, several grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including article omissions ('Advanced English learning course' missing 'an'), preposition errors ('information of the course'), and an incomplete fragment/punctuation issue ('Since the virtual classes are usually about 2 hours a day from Monday to Thursday. I want the company...'). Despite these recurring errors, they rarely impede overall communication.
