Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The candidate addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, the training course is described as a 'Data Operator' course. Second, the student explains what the company can do to help by requesting to reduce working hours to '7 hours to 4 hours per day' and mentioning that a colleague, Sarah Mills, can manage daily duties during absence. Third, the usefulness of the course is explained in terms of professional development, improved communication, and strengthening the relationship between the head office and the customer service department. All parts of the task are covered with relevant ideas, placing this performance at Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure typical of formal correspondence, opening with an objective and closing with a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate different ideas, such as the course details and company help in the second paragraph, and the benefits in the third. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the use of transitions like 'So, if company could allow' and 'Nevertheless, after I have developed' creates awkward logical links and impacts the overall flow. Referencing is generally clear, but cohesive devices need more flexibility.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'invaluable opportunity', 'professional expertise', and 'game changer'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the response, such as writing 'a training course of Data Operator' instead of 'as a Data Operator', 'reduce my working hours to 7 hours to 4 hours', and 'fature' instead of 'future'. Spelling errors like 'mulitask' and 'fature' occur, but they do not impede overall communication. The lexical control aligns well with Band 6.0 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over subordinate clauses, as seen in 'Having worked in my current role for two years, I feel this would be an invaluable opportunity'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb tenses and clause structures, such as 'if company could allow' (missing article), 'Therefore, I can be able to take part' (redundant modal construction), and 'I have been become mulitask person'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical slips limit the proportion of error-free sentences, placing this criterion at Band 5.5.
