Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Manan Modi and I work as the Project Lead in our company. Recently, I saw an advertisement for a training course and I think it would be beneficial for my career progress as well as for our company's success. Therefore, I am writing this letter to seek your permission.
To begin with, this course is especially designed for the working professionals. The course covers the practical as well as theoretical aspects of project management and mainly created to help experienced professionals. Moreover, the course offers lectures by market experts, practical labs and factory visits.
I am really looking forward to joining this course. However, the timings of this course are pulling me back. Hence, it would be appreciated if you could allow me to change my office timing. My classes are at 4.00 p.m. on weekdays. It would be great if you allow me to start work early and finish it by 3.00 p.m.
As I work as a project lead in our company, this course will help me to learn new methods of team handling and improve my communication skills. As a result, I will be able to improve my team's efficiency and productivity.
Please let me know your thoughts on my proposal. I am looking forward to hearing back from you.
Yours faithfully,
Manan.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the training course is described effectively, mentioning that it covers both theoretical and practical aspects of project management and includes expert lectures and factory visits. Second, the requirement for company help is clearly stated by requesting a shift in office timing to attend classes starting at 4:00 p.m. Third, the usefulness of the course is well-explained in terms of learning new team-handling methods and improving communication skills to boost efficiency and productivity. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. Ideas are fully developed and extended with relevant details, fulfilling the Band 7 requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter in the introduction to describing the course, requesting schedule accommodations, explaining the benefits, and providing a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'However', and 'As a result' are used effectively to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, maintaining a clear overall structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, such as 'beneficial for my career progress', 'theoretical aspects', and 'efficiency and productivity'. There are occasional awkward word choices or collocations, such as 'the timings of this course are pulling me back' (instead of holding me back or conflicting with my schedule) and 'team handling' (rather than team management). However, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended message clearly, and spelling is accurate throughout, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writer uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or time clauses such as 'As I work as a project lead... this course will help me...'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and control of grammar and punctuation is generally good. A few minor inaccuracies appear, such as 'mainly created to help' (missing a subject or auxiliary verb like 'it is mainly created') and 'if you allow me' (where 'would allow' might sound more appropriately subjunctive). Despite these minor flaws, communication is never impeded, and the grammar demonstrates a solid Band 7 level.
