Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my interest in health and safety certification. During my job, I noticed that I was not following some steps related to safety hazard. Therefore, I decided to join training course to improve safety at the workplace.
Yesterday, I have communicated to our health and safety supervisor and he suggested me few centers where I can receive formal training. After careful research, I found that Rockwell company will be arranging this seminar next week. I am a lucky that this organization is very close to my home.
This program contain safety inspection, medical aid procedure, workplace hazards, rules and regulations and other approach of lifting weight. It is essential to me because I work independently as a QC, where I have to lift heavy materials. Sometimes I have to use forklift to move skids so it would be good if I learn formall procedures.
Please allow me to attend this seminar and share me the procedure for reimbursement of this course. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you
Kind regards,
Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task instructions. The letter describes the training course relating to health and safety certification provided by the Rockwell company, explains what support is needed from the company by asking for attendance permission and reimbursement procedures, and explains the usefulness of the course for the job by mentioning the role as a Quality Controller who handles heavy materials and operates forklifts. The tone is appropriate for corresponding with a manager, and all ideas are relevant. While some details are slightly brief, all parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, positioning the response well within Band 6.0 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from introducing the issue to describing the course, detailing its usefulness, and finally making a request to the manager. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different topics, such as the background, the course details, and the call to action. However, cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the abrupt transition in 'Yesterday, I have communicated...' and the slight lack of smooth referencing between sentences. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas remains easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'certification', 'safety hazard', 'supervisors', and 'reimbursement'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'communicated to our health and safety supervisor' instead of 'spoke with', 'suggested me few centers' instead of 'suggested a few centres', and 'contain safety inspection' instead of 'covers safety inspections'. Spelling and word forms are generally acceptable, and communication is never impeded, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'After careful research, I found that Rockwell company will be arranging this seminar next week.' However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense misuse ('Yesterday, I have communicated' instead of 'Yesterday, I communicated'), missing articles ('I am a lucky that', 'join training course'), and preposition issues. While these errors occur with some frequency, they rarely impede overall communication, reflecting the core characteristics of Band 6.0 grammar.
