Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request for a training course of Microsoft Power BI that is starting next week in the Sir Marry College.
As you aware, I have recently build some dashboards for the sales and pocurement departments. These data visualisation dashboards were prepared using Power BI application of Microsoft. Admittedly, my current working knowledge of this tool is limited, as mostly I have learned through online tutorials. Therefore, a training is critically required for me to bridge the skill gap.
Sir Marry College is a renowned school in the community for it short term courses. A fee of USD one thousand is being charged by the institute this time, which is lower by 30% due to summer camp. I request you to please provide your approval to Human resource department to reimburse me this amount.
As, presently, sales and procurement dashboards are working stand alone. This training will help me to equip myself with skills required to consolidate both dashboards into a one signle dataset. It will save users alot of time which is currently being wasted on reconciliations.
I have attached the brochure provided by institute for this training. It lists all the syllabus content and fee structure.
I look forward to your kind response.
Yours faithfully
Muhammad Waqass

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully describing the Microsoft Power BI training course at Sir Marry College, explaining what company help is needed (reimbursement through the HR department), and detailing how the course will be useful for consolidating sales and procurement dashboards. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven. While the description of the course fee and company assistance is clear, the explanation of the utility in the workplace could be further extended to fully reflect higher-level descriptor standards. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter to a manager, successfully fulfilling the communicative purpose throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical flow of ideas from describing the training to requesting financial approval and explaining the job benefits. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate different topics, such as the course details, the financial request, and the technical justification. Cohesive devices are employed, though some referencing and transitional links are occasionally mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting a paragraph with 'As, presently...' or 'Admittedly, my current working knowledge...'. Overall, the organization is clear enough to guide the reader smoothly through the correspondence without confusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message about software dashboards and corporate training. The writer attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'data visualisation', 'reconciliations', and 'reimburse', demonstrating a satisfactory lexical range. However, there are noticeable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that prevent the score from being higher, such as 'build' instead of 'built', 'pocurement' instead of 'procurement', and 'signle' instead of 'single'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight an inconsistent control over word forms and spelling conventions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure. There are instances of effective complex clauses, such as 'These data visualisation dashboards were prepared using Power BI application of Microsoft.' However, the text contains a recurring pattern of grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms, prepositions within grammatical patterns, and unnecessary prepositional additions, as seen in 'request for a training course' and 'mostly I have learned'. Punctuation and article usage also show occasional lapses. These errors rarely impede overall communication, but their frequency places the grammar firmly at the midpoint level.
