Student answer (Band 5.0)
Hi. I hope you are doing well. Yesterday I saw an advertisement for a French Training Course on TV in the company cafeteria. When I saw this advertisement, I was happy at that moment. In my job, I connect with so many people regarding my sales job and tell them about our product, but sometimes I miss some leads due to a language barrier because of a lack of french language. If you put my name on this Training course. it would be very helpful for me. I know this is not easy for me to manage work and a French training course, but I manage and do some extra hours for this. It's a chance to achieve the next milestone and grow myself, as well as company growth. Kindly select my name for this course so that I am comnicate with French people and gain some more business from them. Make strong ties for the future. Thanks

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While all three bullet points from the prompt are touched upon—such as describing the French training course, asking for company help, and explaining its usefulness for sales—the ideas remain limited and under-developed. For example, the description of the course is extremely basic ("French Training Course on TV in the company cafeteria"), and the explanation of how the company can help is restricted to a simple request to put the writer's name down. Furthermore, the greeting used ("Hi") is inappropriate for a formal letter to a manager, reflecting a lack of awareness of the appropriate communicative tone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the letter, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The response is presented as a single dense block of text rather than being appropriately divided into paragraphs for different points, which hinders the readability and logical flow. While basic cohesive devices and pronouns are used, such as "When I saw this advertisement" and "so that", referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall transitions between sentences feel mechanical and disjointed, preventing a smooth development of ideas throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring repetitive phrasing such as "see this advertisement" and "French training course". There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as "comnicate" (spelling error) and the phrase "grow myself, as well as company growth", which lack natural collocation and precision. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic message, these frequent slips and the lack of less common lexical items restrict the precision and fluency of the communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences joined by basic conjunctions. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, such as the fragment "If you put my name on this Training course. it would be very helpful for me." There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including tense inconsistencies and missing articles, such as "due to a language barrier because of a lack of french language". These errors require some effort from the reader to untangle the intended meaning.
