Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this email regarding a training course that I would like to enroll. This course will be helpful in my job duties.
This course is about learning French in eight months. I saw this advertisment on social media. I am really intrested to attend this course as it will provide me positive oucomes which I can use towards my work as well as personal growth. It is one week free course and if you pay whole amount at the same time then they provide additional twenty percent discount.
I would be greatful if company do me a huge favour. This course timing and my work timing are at the same time. If upper managment could change my job timing from early morning to afternoon. I will make sure my tarining will not be an issue during my working hours.
As you know, our mostly clients are from French countries. I believe that this course will provide me sufficient knowledge to understant clients problems. Eventually, I will be able to provide positive outcome for the company.
I hope you will find this course benifical. Waiting for your positive responce.
Thanks and Regards,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the prompt, though the development of ideas remains limited and contains some contradictory information. For instance, the opening mentions an eight-month course, but later describes it as a 'one week free course', which causes confusion regarding the nature of the training. The writer successfully touches upon the required bullet points by describing the French learning opportunity, requesting schedule changes from management, and noting the professional benefits of dealing with clients. However, the position is not always clear due to these inconsistencies, and the ideas are presented in a somewhat generalized way without sufficient extension. To reach the next level, all aspects of the task need to be elaborated with clearer, more logically consistent details and fully developed explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a standard letter structure with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph layout dedicated to the distinct prompts. Paragraphing is utilized adequately to separate the introduction, course details, company support requests, and workplace benefits. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or abrupt, and referencing is not always clear, such as the abrupt transition between mentioning social media and discussing the pricing structure. Additionally, cohesive devices are occasionally repetitive or overused. To improve cohesion further and progress upward, the writer needs to employ a wider range of logical connectors and ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs to establish a clearer overall progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing enough range to communicate the basic message, but it features noticeable errors in spelling, word choice, and word formation that restrict precision. Examples of spelling and lexical slips include 'advertisment', 'intrested', 'oucomes', 'greatful', 'managment', 'tarining', 'benifical', and 'responce'. Furthermore, collocation and word choice are sometimes awkward, such as 'pay whole amount' instead of paying in full. The range remains limited, and these recurring inaccuracies occasionally distract the reader. Achieving a higher band would require a broader selection of less common lexical items, greater precision in word choice and style, and accurate spelling throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional clauses and relative clauses, as seen in 'If upper managment could change my job timing... I will make sure...' and '...which I can use towards my work'. However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to noticeable grammatical errors. Issues include awkward preposition use ('at the same time' instead of simultaneously, and 'from French countries' rather than French-speaking countries), awkward phrasing in verb patterns ('would like to enroll' missing the preposition 'in'), and punctuation errors in salutations and sign-offs. Frequent errors persist and occasionally cause minor difficulty, though they rarely impede overall communication. A stronger performance would require greater control over complex sentence structures and a higher proportion of error-free sentences.
