Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request permission for enrolling myself in a software automation training course which I believe would be useful for me and the company.
This is an 8 week automation course which teaches advanced playwright with typescript. It will enable our test scripts to be automated and will eventually save us enormous time.
Since the classes are scheduled during the weekdays from 4 pm to 8 pm, I would have to leave the office little early. I would be grateful if my office timings are made flexible during this period. In case of emergency, I will always be available via call.
Because typescript is an emerging tool and is very new to the market, this would be extremely beneficial as our company would have the first movers advantage to automate our test cases. Not only this will save our time, it will save us a lot of money as there would be less workforce needed for the completion of our tasks.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Naman Sannan

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully address all parts of the task by clearly describing the software automation training course using playwright and typescript, explaining how the company can help through flexible working hours, and outlining how the course will benefit your job by saving time and money. Your tone is appropriately formal for a business letter to a manager. To reach the highest bands, the ideas could be extended even further with more specific details regarding the course schedule or exact project applications. However, your position and purpose remain entirely clear and well-supported throughout the text, fully satisfying this level of performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the initial request to the course details, the required company support, and finally the organizational benefits. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Since the classes', 'In case of emergency', and 'Not only this will save', ensuring the text flows naturally. To achieve an even higher score, you could employ a wider variety of advanced cohesive links and ensure referencing remains precise, but your overall arrangement is clear, coherent, and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully utilizing less common business and technical terms such as 'software automation', 'first movers advantage', and 'emerging tool'. Your spelling is generally accurate, and word choices effectively convey your message. There are minor lexical slips, such as 'for enrolling' instead of 'to enroll' and 'leave the office little early' where an article is missing. To reach the next level, you need to minimize these occasional errors in word choice and collocation while expanding your use of sophisticated phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display a good variety of complex sentence structures, incorporating conditional clauses ('In case of emergency, I will always be available') and subordinate clauses ('Since the classes are scheduled...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, showing solid control over grammar and punctuation. However, a few minor errors persist, such as the missing auxiliary or inversion after a negative opener in 'Not only this will save our time' (which should be 'Not only will this save our time'). Continuing to polish these complex grammatical patterns will help you achieve complete accuracy.
