Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to seek your permission to enroll in the PLC programming course which I saw recently on The Tribune newspaper.

I would like to take admission in PLC programming course for several reasons. As you know, I have been working at your company for three years as an electrical technician. This course will allow me to perform my duties more efficiently. I could learn different methods of coding and effective ways to troubleshoot the faults in our automated machines.

I would really appreciate it if could allow me to attend this course and reimburse the tution fees. The timing of this course is 9 am to 12 pm on weekdays, so it would be great if you could allow me to attend this course online from our company. I will manage my work responsibilities by working additional hours in the evenings.

I believe this course also benefit the company. After mastering this course I could make efficient programmes and help our electrical engineering team diagnose faults during breakdowns.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three requirements and maintains a clear, polite request throughout. You describe the PLC programming course and connect it to your work as an electrical technician, explaining that it would help you code and troubleshoot automated machines. You also make specific requests for fee reimbursement and permission to attend online, and offer to work extra hours. The final paragraph explains a benefit to the company through improved programming and fault diagnosis. These relevant details extend the main ideas well. To make the case even more fully developed, clarify how the course’s content or duration relates to your current responsibilities, and specify what support you need if online attendance is not available. Overall, the purpose and position are clear and consistently maintained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, logical sequence: you introduce the request, explain your reasons, set out the support needed, and conclude with benefits to the company. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, while phrases such as “As you know,” “so,” and “After mastering this course” guide the reader through the argument. The letter is easy to follow and its formal opening and closing suit the context. Some links are a little repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “this course” and “I could,” and the final paragraph could connect more explicitly to the earlier explanation of your duties. Varying references and using a more deliberate transition between personal and company benefits would make cohesion more flexible and less noticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-relevant vocabulary, including “PLC programming,” “electrical technician,” “automated machines,” “troubleshoot,” and “diagnose faults.” These terms make the purpose of the training clear, and the tone is generally appropriate for a workplace letter. There are also some less natural choices that limit precision: “take admission in” is not idiomatic in this context, “tution” is misspelled, and “make efficient programmes” is an awkward collocation. “The Tribune newspaper” could also be expressed more naturally as “an advertisement in The Tribune.” Aim to use accurate collocations for requesting enrolment and describing technical outcomes. This would build on your relevant vocabulary and make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a useful mix of simple and complex structures, and many sentences are accurate, including “As you know, I have been working at your company for three years as an electrical technician” and “I will manage my work responsibilities by working additional hours in the evenings.” Conditional and subordinate structures also help express requests and reasons. A few errors remain: “if could allow me” is missing the subject “you,” and “I believe this course also benefit the company” needs a correctly formed verb, such as “will also benefit.” In “After mastering this course I could…,” add a comma after the introductory phrase. These slips do not obscure your meaning, but checking subjects, verb forms, and punctuation would improve consistency while preserving your range.
