Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I just wanted to write an quick letter about a advertisement from your organization about the the training course which is helpful for my job. I am currently working for an international company from my home and it has a lot of work with Power Bi, I am only aware of the beignner methods to use it. But as there is a full fledged course for this application provided by you. I am really interested to get enrolled in the course.

Just before we get started with this, there are few questions in my mind that I would like to clear, before we onboard. So first thing first what is the duration of this course, what is the cost of the course. Moreover, will it be a live session if yes, will that be recorded ? so if I can access it afterwards also. Most importantly, the avaliability as I work through weekdays and only free on weekend mornings or maybe we can dicsuss through this part.

Thank you for your understanding and appreciate your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Kind Regards,

Jashandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The letter identifies the general subject—a Power BI course—and explains that you have only beginner-level knowledge, so the reader can understand your interest. However, it does not fulfil the three requested points: it is addressed to “Dear Sir or Madam” and asks about course details, rather than writing to your manager; it does not clearly ask what the company could do to support you; and it does not explain how the training would improve your work. The questions about duration, cost, recordings and weekend availability are relevant to enrolling, but they replace the task’s main purposes. To make the response more complete, describe the course briefly, request specific support such as funding or time off, and connect advanced Power BI skills to a work responsibility.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The ideas are grouped into a course-interest paragraph and a paragraph of questions, followed by a closing, so the reader can follow the broad sequence. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Most importantly” also signal additions. However, the progression is not well matched to the purpose of a letter to a manager: the questions about course logistics take over, while the request for company support and the benefit to your job are absent. Some transitions are awkward or mechanical, including “So first thing first,” and the long sequence of questions is difficult to scan. Organise the body around the task points, using separate paragraphs for the course, the support requested, and its workplace value.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “training course,” “Power BI,” “live session,” “recorded,” and “availability.” These choices make the general subject clear. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “beignner,” “avaliability,” and “dicsuss.” Some expressions are informal or unnatural for a professional letter, including “full fledged course,” “first thing first,” and “get enrolled.” The phrase “an advertisement from your organization” also makes the recipient sound like the course provider rather than your manager. Aim for accurate, professional wording and use vocabulary that directly expresses workplace support and benefits, such as requesting sponsorship or explaining how data-analysis skills would help with reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response attempts both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main message is generally understandable. However, errors in articles and sentence construction are noticeable: “an quick letter” and “a advertisement” use incorrect articles, while “But as there is a full fledged course … provided by you” is an incomplete sentence. The opening also contains a run-on structure joining several ideas with commas, and the question sequence needs clearer punctuation and sentence boundaries. “Thank you for your understanding and appreciate your consideration” lacks a clear subject for “appreciate.” Review article use, complete clauses, and punctuation around questions. Shorter, controlled sentences would make the request easier to understand while still allowing you to show a range of structures.
