Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to inform you about the advertisement which I saw that your conpany would be running a training course programme. I am so much interested in applying for the training programme and I believe it would be relevant in my field.
I would want to participate in the training course of communication and public relations. I believe that it would be relevant in my field since I studied medicine. In a hospital setting, I would be dealing with interactions of patients on a daily basis. I would want to improve on my communication skills and my interacting with people. This is one skill that is very important when it comes to becoming a doctor. As a doctor learning how to communicate clearly to patients, understanding the patients and having empathy for them. This brings respect and trust towards the doctor. Such patients sees the doctor has someone who is highly professional based on his communication.
Thank you for consideration and i am open to receive your feedback.
Yours faithfully,
Oyem Great.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You explain the course you want to take—communication and public relations—and give a relevant reason linked to your medical background and patient interactions. However, the response only minimally fulfils the task because it does not explain what the company could do to help you, such as paying the fee, allowing time off, or arranging cover. The course description is also brief, and its practical value is discussed mainly in general terms rather than showing how the training would improve your work. The opening refers to an advertisement about a course, but the wording leaves unclear whether the company is running it or you found it elsewhere. Address each requested point directly and develop the benefits with specific workplace examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The letter has a recognisable sequence: you introduce your interest, describe the course and its relevance, then close politely. The central paragraph also groups related points about communication with patients. However, the response has limited paragraph development, and the progression is weakened by the missing explanation of how the company could support your attendance. Some links between ideas are repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “I would want” and “I believe.” The sentence beginning “As a doctor learning how to communicate clearly…” is incomplete, which interrupts the flow. Use separate paragraphs for the course, the requested company support, and the expected work benefits, with clearer transitions between them.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “communication,” “public relations,” “empathy,” “professional,” and “trust.” These choices make your intended benefit understandable and show some topic-specific language. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions, such as “interactions of patients,” “improve on my communication skills,” and “receive your feedback.” “Conpany” is also misspelled, and “so much interested” is not a natural collocation. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the main message, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for more conventional workplace phrases, such as “patient interactions,” “develop my communication skills,” and “I would appreciate your response.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the reason clause in “since I studied medicine” and the conditional-style explanation of how communication builds trust. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. “Such patients sees” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the doctor has someone” uses the wrong form where “as” is needed. The sentence “As a doctor learning how to communicate clearly to patients…” is a fragment, and “Thank you for consideration” is missing an article. Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “i am.” Improve accuracy by checking agreement, articles, and sentence completeness, and make sure each sentence has a clear subject and main verb.
