Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Madam,

My aim in writing this letter is to inform you about a neonatal nutritional training course that I would like to take . I have being looking forward to enhancing my knowledge in the area of Neonatal Nurition for quite some time now as many of our babies born in our facility are either born to mothers with metabolic issues or looking malnurished because of the poor educational literacy level of this area (being in a rural evironment ).

This courrse would help to provide good education to mothers of baby hospitalised in our care. This helps to curb many issues that will affect their physical and mental developmnent. As we all know infants gets majority of their energy source from their nutrition .Also , this course will provide a frame for research and record keeping for infants with such metabolic diseases.

I would want to employ the assistance of the department by providing me with a week study leave from work to help me engage and actively participate in the various requirement for this course . Financial bonuses would also be very welcomed as it would lessen the weight of burden in regards to the cost .

I sincerely wish my request is postively considered and i look forward to hearing from you anytime soones

Yours sincerely,

Aragba Rebekah

Registered nurse .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you describe a neonatal nutrition course, ask for study leave and financial support, and explain how the training could help educate mothers and support research and record-keeping. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the examples about infants with metabolic conditions make the request relevant to your nursing role. However, the support you request could be more specific—for example, whether the company might pay the course fee or cover travel—and the course itself is not described in much detail. The benefits are also somewhat general, particularly the claim that education will curb problems affecting development. More precise details and fuller development of these points would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable progression: you introduce the course and its relevance, explain its potential benefits, make your request, and close politely. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and links such as “This helps” and “Also” show how ideas relate. The overall arrangement is coherent, but some connections are not fully clear. For instance, “This helps” could refer either to educating mothers or to the course, and the transition from the course’s benefits to the request for support is abrupt. A few long sentences also combine several ideas, making the progression harder to follow. Use clearer references and more deliberate transitions between the course, its benefits, and the assistance requested.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the subject, including “neonatal nutritional training,” “metabolic issues,” “physical and mental development,” and “record keeping.” These choices communicate the professional context and show attempts to use more specific language. However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural expressions reduce accuracy, including “Nurition,” “malnurished,” “employ the assistance,” and “lessen the weight of burden.” Some wording is also repetitive, such as repeated references to “course” and “help.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural collocations, especially when making a formal request. This would make your vocabulary more precise while retaining the relevant specialist terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “as many of our babies…” and the sentence about the course providing a framework for research. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “I have being looking forward” should use the correct participle, while “infants gets” has a subject–verb agreement problem. “Mothers of baby hospitalised” also needs clearer plural and article choices. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, and some sentences run together. Review verb forms and agreement, and divide longer sentences where they contain several linked ideas; this will improve control without sacrificing complexity.
