Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am working as a Project Manager in your company from a last one year. I am having a hard time in understanding a french consumers because of languauge barrier. From a few days, I was intensively searching for the online french learning course and fortunately I found one in the instagram advertisement.

As an overview, the online class would be held every single day from eight to nine in the morning. Coincidently, the office also begins at eight and clearly I would not be able to start my classes. For this purpose, I want to request you to adjust the beginning time of the shift from ten in the morning.

This course would be significantly helpful to understand the suppliers and buyers appropriately from the Montreal region. As this region is known for french speakers and they are reluctant to speak an english language. For the progression of business in the Montreal, I feel to be a competent user of their native language is a need of hour.

It would be really appreciated if you could give a response at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you identify an online French course, ask the company to adjust your shift, and explain how French could help with Montreal-based suppliers and buyers. The practical details about classes running from eight to nine make your request understandable, and the business benefit is relevant. However, the course description is brief, and the request focuses on changing your start time without explaining whether you are seeking any other support, such as permission to attend during work hours or help with course fees. The final benefit is also somewhat general. To strengthen the letter, specify the course provider or duration if known, make the support you want explicit, and give a concrete example of how improved French would help your project work.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: you explain the language difficulty, describe the course and make a request, then outline its workplace value before closing politely. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and links such as “For this purpose” and “As this region is known” show an effort to connect ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation, while the progression is not consistently smooth enough to feel fully controlled. For example, “Coincidently” introduces the scheduling conflict, but the connection between the class time and the proposed shift change could be stated more directly. The sentence beginning “As this region…” is also a fragment, interrupting the flow. Use clearer transitions and connect supporting explanations to the main request.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “language barrier,” “suppliers and buyers,” “Montreal region,” and “native language.” These choices make your purpose and the business context clear, and phrases such as “at your earliest convenience” suit a formal letter. There are also some inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision, including “a french consumers,” “intensively searching,” and “a need of hour.” The spelling errors in “languauge” and “instagram” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and consistent capitalization: for example, say “French-speaking clients” and “I have been looking for a course.” Proofreading these details would make your vocabulary more reliable without requiring more elaborate wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the explanation of the scheduling conflict and the clause about Montreal being known for French speakers. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “I am working … from a last one year,” “I am having a hard time in understanding,” and “adjust the beginning time of the shift from ten,” where tense, article use, and sentence construction need attention. “As this region is known for French speakers…” is a dependent clause presented as a complete sentence. Practise accurate present-perfect forms for situations continuing to the present, and check articles and prepositions in common patterns. Combining the fragment with the preceding sentence would also improve control of complex structures.
