IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You work for an international company. You have seen an advertisement for a training course which will be useful for your job.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- describe the training course you want to do
- explain what the company could do to help you
- say how the course will be useful for your job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to ask for a favour from the company. I recently saw an advertisement for a training program aimed at improving communication skills.
As you are aware, I am working on the front line for all the current projects of our company. I have to close most of the deals with international clients, and communication is the key that makes a difference. If we present our products more effectively, it will bring in more orders.
I am proud to be one of the top-performing employees this year, and I am keen to improve my performance further, which will help our company grow. This training will boost my confidence in dealing with customers from all over the world and will also help me compete better with our rivals.
I would be grateful if you could grant me the funds for this training program along with a few days off. I assure you that it will be worth the investment.
Looking forward to a positive response from you.
Yours faithfully,
Muhammad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requested points: it identifies a communication-skills training programme, asks the company to fund it and allow time off, and explains its relevance to client-facing work. The link between clearer product presentations and more orders is particularly relevant. The purpose and request are clear throughout, and the assurance that the investment will be worthwhile supports the case. However, the course itself is described only generally; details such as its duration, format, or specific skills covered would make this part more complete. The benefits are also somewhat broad, especially the claim that it will help you “compete better with our rivals.” Adding a concrete example of a work task the training would improve would develop the case further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The ideas follow a clear progression: you introduce the request, explain your client-facing responsibilities and the course’s potential benefits, then make a practical request for support. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and links such as “As you are aware,” “If,” and “which” make relationships between ideas easy to follow. The closing is also appropriate for a formal letter. To make the organisation even more polished, give the course description and the requested support their own clearly focused sections; at present, the course is mentioned briefly before the letter moves quickly into your job responsibilities. The transition from your performance record to the course’s benefits could also be made more explicit, so each point builds directly toward the request.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of workplace and business vocabulary, including “front line,” “international clients,” “top-performing employees,” and “investment.” These choices make the purpose clear and show some flexibility beyond basic wording. There are, however, a few phrases that are broad or not quite natural in this context. “Ask for a favour from the company” is less precise than directly requesting sponsorship, while “close most of the deals” and “compete better with our rivals” could be expressed more professionally and specifically. “Training program” is understandable, but the letter would benefit from naming the course or its particular content. More precise collocations would strengthen the professional tone and help explain the practical value of the training.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter uses a good mix of sentence forms, including conditional and relative clauses: “If we present our products more effectively, it will bring in more orders” and “which will help our company grow.” Most sentences are clear and well controlled, and punctuation generally supports the meaning. A few grammatical or structural choices could be refined. “I am working on the front line for all the current projects” is awkwardly constructed; a clearer pattern would be “I work on the front line across our current projects.” Also, “Looking forward to a positive response from you” is a sentence fragment in formal writing; “I look forward to hearing from you” would be complete. Continue using complex structures, while checking that each sentence has a clear subject and verb.
