IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You work for an international company. You have seen an advertisement for a training course which will be useful for your job.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- describe the training course you want to do
- explain what the company could do to help you
- say how the course will be useful for your job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are well. I am writing to you regarding a training opportunity I found online that I think would be benficial for my work here at Google.
The course is titled 'AI Development' and in summary it is designed to enhance knowledge on relevant Articificlal Inteligence software and how it can be best used in today's world. It is a three-hour course that is completed online.
One way Google could help me would be by booking my place in this course. You may need to advise why I should obtain a place in the course as spaces are limited.
This has to be done by next week and it will cost $200 per person. I would really appreiate it if this could be actioned please.
I feel like the course will be very relevant to my current job in the ICT branch of Google, especially given how the world today is shaping and the increasing use of AI. Moreover, I think it would be worthwhile for Google and myself as I would increase my own knowledge and in turn and I could better use this in my current role.
Yours faithfully,
NIall

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you identify the “AI Development” course, ask the company to book a place, and explain its relevance to your ICT role. The practical details—online delivery, three hours, a $200 fee, and a deadline—make the request clear. However, the explanation of how the company could help is less fully developed: “booking my place” is specific, but the following sentence about advising why you should obtain a place is unclear about what action you want from your manager. The job benefit is also somewhat general, referring to the increasing use of AI without giving a concrete example of how you would apply the training. Clarifying the requested support and adding one work-related application would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening purpose, course details, a request for support, and a final explanation of its value to your role. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these stages, and transitions such as “Moreover” connect related points. Some links are less clear or slightly mechanical, however. “You may need to advise why I should obtain a place” does not clearly connect to the request to book the course, while “in turn and I could” disrupts the final sentence’s progression. The closing is appropriately separated, though the letter would flow more naturally if the support requested and its practical benefit were linked more explicitly. Overall, the organisation is coherent, but some cohesion and referencing need clearer control.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal workplace request, including relevant terms such as “training opportunity,” “spaces are limited,” “current role,” and “increasing use of AI.” These choices communicate the topic effectively, and the tone is generally suitable. Some spelling errors—“benficial,” “Articificlal,” “Inteligence,” and “appreiate”—reduce accuracy, while phrases such as “how the world today is shaping” and “actioned please” are not natural in this context. “Enhance knowledge on” is also less idiomatic than a more precise collocation. These issues do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural workplace phrasing would improve control and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You show a useful mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled, such as “It is a three-hour course that is completed online” and “I am writing to you regarding a training opportunity I found online.” This supports clear communication. Some grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “I would increase my own knowledge and in turn and I could better use this,” the repeated conjunction makes the structure faulty; revise it to “I would increase my knowledge and, in turn, use it more effectively.” The sentence beginning “You may need to advise why” is also structurally awkward and unclear. The comma after “Dear Sir” is appropriate, but the salutation should match the task’s requested “Dear Sir or Madam.” Your control is generally sound, though these errors prevent consistently polished complex sentences.
