IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You work for an international company. You have seen an advertisement for a training course which will be useful for your job.
Write a letter to your manager. In your letter
- describe the training course you want to do
- explain what the company could do to help you
- say how the course will be useful for your job
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request the company into sponsoring me to attend a training course. Which I believe, will be beneficial for organisation.
Recently, I came across an advertisement on coding using rust programming language, taught by industry experts using cutting edge technology. I believe this course will enhance my current skill-set by advancing my knowledge in this technology, further pushing our company to new heights in this field; greatly increase the efficiency of our products.
I would request the company to grant me a fund of $4000 to pursue this course. I ensure you that I will complete my current job duties before I start my training session next month. While I am away, one of my colleagues particularly Sean, will be able to perform my job duties. Since I have trained him extensively for any emergency. In case my physical presence is required in office, I will attend office for half day as my course has most classes in evening.
I hope you will consider my request and reply to this letter on your earliest convenience.
Yours Sincerely,
John Conner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requirements: it identifies a Rust programming course, requests $4,000 in support, and explains that the training could improve your skills and product efficiency. The purpose is clear from the opening, and the practical arrangements for covering your duties add relevant detail. However, the course description remains fairly general: you do not give its duration, schedule, or specific content beyond coding in Rust. The benefit to the company is also asserted rather than illustrated with a concrete example of how you would apply the training. These relevant ideas meet the task well, while fuller development and a more specific explanation of workplace benefits would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: you introduce the request, describe the course and its value, explain the funding and cover arrangements, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Recently,” “While I am away,” and “In case” guide the reader through the details. Some connections are less smooth, however. “Which I believe” is separated from the sentence it depends on, and “Since I have trained him extensively” is left as a fragment, interrupting the flow of the arrangements paragraph. The sequence is still easy to follow, but joining these ideas into complete sentences and varying transitions more naturally would make cohesion less noticeable and more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal workplace request, including “industry experts,” “enhance,” “efficiency,” and “extensively.” These choices communicate the subject and your intended benefits clearly, and the technical reference to Rust is relevant. Some less common expressions are not fully natural or precise: “request the company into sponsoring me” and “grant me a fund” do not express the request idiomatically, while “pushing our company to new heights” is broad and promotional. “Cutting edge technology” would also be clearer if linked to what the course actually teaches. More accurate collocations and specific workplace vocabulary would strengthen precision while retaining the formal tone.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple and more complex forms, such as the sentence beginning “While I am away” and the conditional arrangement “In case my physical presence is required.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. “Which I believe, will be beneficial” is an incomplete sentence and has misplaced punctuation; it should be joined to the preceding sentence. “Since I have trained him extensively for any emergency” is also a dependent clause presented as a sentence. In addition, “I ensure you” should be “I assure you,” though this is primarily a word-choice issue. Review sentence boundaries and clause structure, and check punctuation around introductory clauses, to make the complex sentences more consistently controlled.
