Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to share my concern about a new training course that is useful.
Recently, I saw an advertisement for a new training course on a website. This training course is about the French language. I am really excited to take this course because it will offer me many opportunities.
However, I would appreciate your support in taking this course, as we always rely on third parties for our international meetings and deals. It could be beneficial for the company in order to save money on translator fees. I would need to take some days off from work to take this course and need help collecting funds, as it is an expensive course.
This course is fruitful for my job because it will assist me in dealing with overseas organisations and give me a chance to work abroad. I can get a promotion if I do it. I would be glad if you could help me.
I look forward to your response, and thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Karanvir Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three required points: it identifies a French-language course, asks the company for time off and financial help, and explains that French could support work with overseas organisations. The request to reduce reliance on translators also gives the manager a relevant business reason to support it. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. The course itself is described only as being about French, without details such as its duration, format, or schedule, and the benefit of being able to work abroad is asserted rather than explained. The opening phrase “share my concern” is also unclear, since the letter expresses interest rather than a concern. Clarifying these points would make the purpose and case for support more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a generally clear sequence: you introduce the course, explain the support you need, describe its workplace value, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Recently,” “However,” and “because” make the relationships between ideas understandable. Some connections are less smooth or precise, though. “However” suggests a contrast that is not clearly established, while “This course is fruitful for my job” begins a new point without a particularly natural link to the preceding request. The final paragraph also combines several benefits quickly. More deliberate transitions and clearer links between the company’s investment and the expected work outcomes would make the progression feel more controlled and less formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “international meetings,” “translator fees,” “overseas organisations,” and “promotion.” There are also attempts at more formal or less common wording, such as “beneficial” and “fruitful.” Some choices are imprecise or unnatural in context: “share my concern” does not accurately express enthusiasm, and “fruitful for my job” is not a natural collocation. “Help collecting funds” is also vague, and “take some days off” could be expressed more precisely. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit the naturalness and precision of the letter. Aim for conventional workplace phrases and specific wording when describing the course and the support requested.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter includes a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, such as “I would appreciate your support in taking this course, as we always rely on third parties…” and “I would be glad if you could help me.” Most sentences are clear, and the grammar generally allows the reader to follow your request. Some errors or awkward constructions remain. In “I would need to take some days off from work to take this course and need help collecting funds,” the repeated “need” would be clearer with parallel phrasing, such as “and would need help with the cost.” The sentence “I can get a promotion if I do it” also uses an unclear reference (“it”) and presents the outcome too directly. More consistent parallel structures and clearer pronoun references would strengthen control.
