Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is widely held that the way an individual dresses reveals a lot about a person’s personality and their culture. I strongly agree with this view because it is easier to tell a lot about a person’s nature and their cultural practises based on their outfits.
One significant reason why I agree with this statement is that the way people dress reveals a lot about their personalities. This can be attributed to the fact that humans are social animals and through verbal or non-verbal cues they always try to communicate. Individuals often dress the way they want to be perceived by others. In practice, people select clothing items, accessories and colours which they like wearing and that outfit creates a social image of themselves, thereby dressing how they want to be perceived in the society. To illustrate, athletes and body builders often wear outfits which not only reveal their active lifestyle but also accentuates their muscular physiques. Consequently, through outfits and clothing accessories a lot can be revealed about their personalities.
Equally important is the fact that clothing expresses much about their cultural practices and traditions. This is largely because particular clothing accessories are often associated with cultural practices and have religious significance. To illustrate, individuals following Sikhism often wear turbans highlighting their cultural heritage. Furthermore, by wearing clothing accessories which hold cultural significance people can showcase their values and their respect towards their culture. Therefore, it is important to understand that clothing enables others to recognize an individual’s cultural background.
In conclusion, the way people dress is a non-verbal form of communication and I agree that a lot can be revealed about a person’s character and their culture by the way they dress.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that is maintained throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of athletes and the Sikh turban. The development is logical, though it could be further extended to reach a higher band. For instance, the discussion on personality could delve deeper into the psychological aspect of 'social image' rather than just stating that people dress how they want to be perceived. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question, demonstrating a good understanding of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'One significant reason', 'Equally important', and 'To illustrate' are used effectively to link ideas. However, the transition between the two main points could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that the reader can easily track the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient and generally appropriate for the task. You have used some good collocations and topic-specific terms like 'cultural heritage', 'non-verbal cues', and 'muscular physiques'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is successful. However, there is some repetition of phrases such as 'a lot can be revealed' and 'the way people dress'. To improve, try to vary your phrasing by using synonyms or different sentence structures to express the same idea. Overall, the lexical range is adequate and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There is a minor subject-verb agreement error in the second paragraph: 'outfit... accentuates' (should be 'outfits... accentuate' to match the plural subject). Punctuation is generally correct, though some sentences could benefit from more varied structures to enhance the flow. The control of grammar is good, and the occasional errors do not cause any difficulty for the reader or impede the clarity of your argument.
