Some people say that it is possible to tell a lot about a person’s culture and character from their choice of clothes.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
I can agree and disagree at the same time to say about a persons culture and character based on their clothes because some people do style according to their personalities to show case their mentality. Just by seeing their fashion people can notice that this person is from this place or something about on character. I have seen many people through countries where some people do modeling but that has nothing to do with their culture and character.
When i said i will disagree it is because a close friend of mine works as a chef in a hotel and he is from India where he is deeply rooted to his culture and his choice of clothes are completely different when he is in hometown to when he is in Canada. He looks like a professional model when he is in Canada even though he is working in a kitchen and a completely different person in his styling when he is at home.
It is not just him i have seen few people where i can not say what his culture or character regarding their clothes maybe it is because of mixed cultures that they grow up in the society, not sure but this was reason to disagree.
This is my personal experience from the place where i work, i have seen people with tattoos all over the body, long hair, punk styles and different styles of persons where they represent their character or what they like or part of his culture in their way of dressing fashion. When i spoke to few of my friends what is the reason behind your style they started to say like music, culture, or his number one character in his life like ideal person to always have with them and easy to recognize what they are.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument. However, the position is somewhat ambiguous; the introduction states the writer can 'agree and disagree at the same time,' which lacks the clear, consistent stance required for higher bands. While the essay provides personal examples, such as the friend who is a chef and the observations at the workplace, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. The arguments are relevant but could be more deeply explored to fully address the implications of culture and character in relation to fashion. The conclusion is missing, which leaves the essay feeling incomplete.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. There is a reliance on simple linking words like 'and' or 'because,' and some sentences lack logical flow, such as the transition from the chef example to the general observation about mixed cultures. The referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to track the subject matter across sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but remains quite basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'choice of clothes,' 'different styles,' and 'my personal experience' appear frequently without much variation. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'mentality' and 'deeply rooted,' but these are not always used with precision. The word choice is sufficient to convey the general meaning, but the lack of a wider range of collocations and less common lexical items prevents the essay from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'some people do style'), incorrect pronoun usage (e.g., 'what his culture'), and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'I have seen few people where i can not say'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization of 'I'. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
