Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is an irrefutable fact that in this unprecedented era, a person's culture has become a subject of intense debate. On the basis of that a few people contend that choices of clothing could express a lot more information about an individual's culture and personality. According to my perspective, I firmly agree with this notion and this essay will analyze my view with the relevant examples in the ensuing paragraphs.

To commence with, discussing the reasons of why the clothing pattern depicts the cultural values, the first and foremost reason is following the traditions. In some religions, people often wear a particular attire in the daily routine to remain rooted with culture. To illustrate further, by wearing traditional clothes they typically respect their culture, traditions, norms and rituals. To exemplify, one study conducted by the 'Cultural Awareness Campaign' in Japan had shown that about a 70% of folks in the country choose to wear traditional dress 'Kimono' to showcase their heritage and culture.

Furthermore, wearing traditional costumes enables individuals to feel proud. It is commonly believed that these kind of persons are usually well-organized, respectful, having civic sense, morality in their lives. To add to this, these people are absolutely judged by society on the basis of their sense of dressing. For instance, in 'Jainism', a person who does not follow Jain dress code is often neglected by the community and considered inauspicious in the religion. Moreover, the citizens who do follow traditional method of dressing are considered as orthodox people. They do not possess the sense of living in this modernized world and are not compatible to live with this globalized world.

In essence, although people should not not be judged by society on the basis of dressing sense as people could have different opinions, personalities and attitude, I strongly believe that choices of clothes could give enormous information about thinking, culture, tradition, behavior and character.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of traditional attire in Japan and the social implications within Jainism. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat uneven. The second paragraph introduces interesting examples, but the explanation of how these relate to 'character' is less developed than the cultural aspect. The conclusion effectively summarizes the stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the link between clothing and personality traits is explored with the same depth as the cultural examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'To commence with', 'To illustrate further', and 'In essence', which help guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the use of 'To add to this' and 'Moreover' in the same paragraph could be varied to improve the natural progression of ideas. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the central argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and allows for clear communication. You have used some good topic-specific collocations like 'traditional attire', 'showcase their heritage', and 'cultural values'. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'these kind of persons' (should be 'these kinds of people') and 'folks' (which is too informal for an academic essay). There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, but it is not always precise. Expanding your range of academic vocabulary and focusing on more natural collocations will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. Examples include 'a 70% of folks' (the article 'a' is unnecessary) and 'people should not not be judged' (a repetition error). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'not compatible to live with this globalized world'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining the use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
